How to use the CTR calculator

  1. 1Enter the number of clicks your ad received.
  2. 2Enter the number of impressions. Both are in Meta Ads Manager.
  3. 3Read your CTR as a percentage.
  4. 4Enter your monthly budget below the result to see how many distinct ads it can test.

How click-through rate is calculated

CTR is clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. If 20,000 people saw your ad and 300 clicked, your CTR is 1.5 percent.

Meta shows several click metrics. Use the one that matches your question: all clicks include likes and profile taps, while link clicks count only visits to your landing page. For ecommerce, link click-through rate is usually the number that matters.

What your CTR is really telling you

CTR is a read on the creative. If your ad is shown to the right people and few of them click, the image, hook or offer is not earning attention. A rising CTR on a new ad is the quickest early sign that an angle is working.

A high CTR is not automatically good. A clickbait hook can pull clicks from people who never buy, which makes your cost per purchase worse. Always read CTR next to your conversion rate and your cost per acquisition.

How to improve it

Change the thing people see first. In a static ad that is the headline text and the main image. Test genuinely different angles, such as a pain point, a result, a comparison and an offer, rather than swapping a button color.

Study what already works. Brands that keep an ad running for months are paying to show it, which means it is earning its place. Looking at long-running ads in your category is a fast way to find angles worth testing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CTR for Facebook ads?
It depends on your industry, offer and placement, so compare against your own account history first. A CTR that is rising on a new ad is more informative than one number from an industry report.
What is the CTR formula?
CTR equals clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.
What is the difference between CTR (all) and link CTR?
CTR (all) counts every click on the ad, including likes, comments and profile taps. Link CTR counts only clicks that take someone to your destination. Use link CTR when you care about website traffic.
Can a CTR be too high?
It can be misleading. If clicks are cheap but nobody buys, the ad may be attracting curious people rather than buyers. Check your conversion rate and cost per purchase as well.
How many impressions do I need before trusting my CTR?
A few thousand impressions gives a rough read, and more is better. With very few impressions, a handful of clicks can swing the percentage a lot.
